Charlie Plummer, the 18 year old actor is terrific. He plays a kid named Charlie who has no mom and the dad he has is prone to run off with his newest fling and leave Charlie to himself. Charlie moves to
Portland with dad and discovers the race track nearby. There he meets a hard nosed horse owner Del played by Steve Buscemi. Del hires him to clean up and do whatever is necessary. Desperate for money after dad gets beaten up and is hospitalized with injuries and a severed bowel, Charlie goes with Del to a horse race requiring an overnight. He gets paid well.
Charlie develops a relationship with the quarter horse Pete, a 5 year old, long past his racing prime. Dad dies and now Charlie depends on Del.
Charlie is an honest kid, having received no real parenting and only his survival instincts get him through. Charlie finds out that when Dels horses start not lose, they are sold to Mexicans, who use them for food.
The third member of Dels troupe is played by Chloe Sevigne and she is the jockey. She helps Charlie and says its a horse, not a pet. When Pete starts to lose and is about to be sold, charlie takes him and sets off for Montana to find dad’s sister. Of course he runs out of gas and money and the boy and his horse walk. charlie talks to him non stop. Its very touching and you hope that Charlie will make it. I thought Charlie Plummer did an academy award performance. See for yourself
Great performance by Charlie Plummer. He should get nominated for this.
