Mr Warmth has left the building. Known for his zinging one liners, he insulted everyone without fear. I remembered him most from those wonderful appearances on Carson. He also was a staple at the Dean Martin roasts. Learning his craft from Jack E Leonard, Don Rickles made a great career of being quick witted and sharp tongued. His career was aided by the support of Frank Sinatra. The story goes that Sinatra first came to a show of Rickles and as he was making his appearance, Rickles reportedly said, ” make yourself comfortable Frank, hit someone.” Sinatra loved the comment and they became friends. Rickles went on to have a great career in TV and movies, theatre and comedy clubs.
Its sad that this generation of comedians is gone now. Red Skelton, Sid Caesar, Rodney Dangerfield, Red Buttons, Jack Carter, Milton Berle, Jack Benny, Jackie Gleason, Buddy Hackett, Lou Costello, Myron Cohen, Redd Foxx, Shelly Barman, Alan King, Shecky Greene! Bob Hope, Joey Bishop,Imagene Coca, Lucille Ball, Phyllis Diller,Joan Rivers, Carl Reiner, Mort Saul to name a few. The party has started Don, they are waiting for you, hope you get past the gate.
